This series of paintings is about monsters. From the bed time monsters that scared me as a child to the abstract ones I have to deal with as an adult. They are a visual representation of the many unseen things that make up our world: feelings, struggles, desires. They range from the more somber "Don't Fracking Touch Me" about energy companies pushing for fracking in the N.Y.C. watershed to the more whimsical "Too Much Of A Good Time" about trying to put on a good face at work after a late Thursday night.
The paintings are loose and they start out abstractly with some figurative elements making their way in towards the final layers. Music and movement are very important to me and many marks are made without looking and using my entire body. I think of Acrylic both in terms of paint and in terms of it's sculptural qualities (some marks can easily get to being 1/2 inch thick). I paint on the wall on polymer primed watercolor paper. The wall makes the act of painting more physical and I enjoy paper for it's ephemerality and close relationship to drawing. The paintings are very fun to make and I hope they make for an interesting viewing experience.
Sincerely,
